Doran Visual is a Brooklyn-based post house that focuses on editing and grading. Started by Danny Doran, Doran Visual works on a variety of online and commercial content, particularly in the fashion space, for brands such as Dior, Vogue, Nike, Mr. Porter, Burberry, Calvin Klein and more.
Whilst Doran Visual has in-house editing and grading talent, they have a network of Flame artists and sound mixers that they bring on board for projects as needed. “My producer and I try to keep things fresh with outside talent, bringing in people that we know are well-suited to a given project”.
Finding a real-time collaboration tool
Danny is always on the lookout for tools that make his life as an editor easier. Previously, he’d tried using Zoom, Google Meet and Skype for real-time collaboration, but was unimpressed with the results. “Stuttering playback was the biggest issue with those tools”, says Danny. “It always felt like a screen recording of a screen recording, with a bunch of dropped frames.”
He came across Louper the day before needing to run a remote editing session with a director. Originally the plan was to work together in Brooklyn, but plans changed and the director ended up being in Greece. “I wanted something that I could sign up for and setup myself, and Louper offered that right off the bat. I was up and running in less than 30 minutes.”
"From that first session, I knew this was a great product. And miles better than trying to run live sessions over Zoom."
“From that first session, I knew this was a great product. And miles better than trying to run live sessions over Zoom. Setup was painless and the stream quality is crisp and clean.”
When asked about other pro-level solutions, Danny says that for a shop of his size, pricing is an important factor. “Evercast feels like they’re targeting enterprise-only with their pricing model, and you can’t even get a feel for the product without contacting one of their sales agents. For me, Louper is priced really well”.
"The best way for brands to build and maintain their reputations and remain relevant is through video"
Video is exploding
The number of companies that need video advertising is exploding. Everyone has a product or service to sell. “I think the best way for brands to build and maintain their reputations and remain relevant is through video” says Danny. “Formats and styles are changing rapidly too - a lot of brands are adopting a far less formal approach to video advertising. You see stuff on TikTok where brands are posting memes as adverts”.
The amount of video content being generated is only increasing, but Danny insists on maintaining creative integrity. He won’t let Doran Visual fall into the trap of painting by numbers. “For me it’s about making work that we’re proud of. I stand by the work we do and won’t compromise on that”. And the way to keep work interesting and creative is by working with others, and keeping communication open and free-flowing.
"Louper helps me maintain very personal relationships with directors and producers"
Relationships are essential
“For me, editing is not about sitting in a dark room all day, not speaking to people. One of my greatest strengths is being a solid collaborator. Louper helps me maintain very personal relationships with directors and producers, helping to steer the direction of a project and ensuring we’re achieving a shared creative vision. That’s when I get really excited about remote collaboration tools - when they allow me to collaborate seamlessly regardless of where me or my clients are physically located”.
Use Louper to stream and collaborate on live shoots, edit sessions, vfx reviews and more - securely and in seriously high quality.
